Reading

We value the immense importance of becoming confident and enthusiastic readers and our curriculum provides countless opportunities for students to read widely and fluently.

Reading is a priority across the whole school; we are all teachers of reading before anything else. Reading Reconsidered strategies are used across faculties to encourage oracy, wider reading and build confident readers.

Students are able to access a range of texts within the school library where staff are on hand to support them as required. Students are also able to recommend and request texts which can be added to the library regularly.

All students in year 7 to 10 will complete a reading assessment in the summer term; year 6 students will complete their assessment during transition day.  This assessment provides teachers with personalised reading strategies for the students they teach, ensuring the continuous development of students' ability to read and interpret complex texts across the curriculum.

Students requiring additional reading intervention will attend sessions in the Learning Oasis. Here, they will follow a variety of different reading interventions that are personalised to each individual, ensuring they make the most progress.

In Year 7 some students will also receive a ‘literacy’ focused lesson once a fortnight. This will allow students to build their confidence in reading, develop their vocabulary, ability to interpret and pick out key information in text.

Additionally, some students may be selected for booster literacy lessons; these sessions are designed to build confidence in tackling new texts and vocabulary that they may not be familiar with.
