Immanuel College Curriculum Intent

All God’s Children

“Perseverance produces character, and character, hope” Romans 5:4

Immanuel College is a fully inclusive secondary school and everything that we do is underpinned by our belief that we are All God’s Children”. Our curriculum reflects our inclusive nature, rooted by the Christian values of perseverance, character, and hope.  The curriculum enables students to flourish in their educational journey, providing a context to their learning and allowing them opportunities to embrace challenges, explore their spirituality, exhibit resilience and demonstrate integrity as they grow to become well-rounded individuals.

Our curriculum fosters confidence, modelled by all members of the Immanuel Family, allowing our students to be ambitious, have high aspirations, challenge social disadvantage and increase social mobility.  Through our broad and balanced curriculum, all students, including those with SEND, have the opportunity to flourish and realise academic success.

We place great emphasis on the core subjects to ensure that students are prepared and equipped to utilise key life skills when they eventually leave us as independent, confident citizens. We also champion the EBacc subjects, as well as the creative arts, sport, physical health and wellbeing, with all students able to access the full range of opportunities. Our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian vision, reinforced through all aspects of our approach to Philosophy, Ethics and Religious Education (PER) as well as through daily collective worship, PSHE, House Competitions and PSALM days. We value the immense importance of becoming confident and enthusiastic readers and our curriculum provides countless opportunities for students to read widely and fluently.

Schemes of work are thoughtfully sequenced and refined by subject specialists, and allow students to revisit learning regularly, enabling opportunities for deep learning to take place. Timely and appropriate assessments are used to gauge levels of understanding and personalised intervention is put in place where necessary. Teachers use precise verbal and written feedback to help students to address misconceptions and understand next steps. We inspire our students to persevere to overcome challenges, develop a strong work ethic and reach their God-given potential.

Our broad enrichment program provides students with a diverse range of activities to develop their character, giving experiences above and beyond the classroom environment to embellish each student's journey as part of the Immanuel Family. Our curriculum recognises the importance of positive role models to foster high aspirations and diversity and inclusivity are embedded into schemes of work. All opportunities are taken to develop active student leadership.

We nurture a culture of hope, inspiring our students to develop a sense of optimism and independence, enabling them to confidently pursue their aspirations and embrace life in all its fullness with abundant possibilities.
