Learning Mentors
As part of the government initiative called 'Excellence in Cities' the school has funding for five Learning Mentors. Learning Mentors are based in school and work with students who may benefit from additional support or personal attention in order to achieve their full potenetial. Amentor would talk with the student about barriers to learning, identifying and agreeing upon targets to aim for. These may include improving behaviour, increasing levels of attainment and raising pupil aspiration.

What we do

  • Collect referrals from Heads of Year
  • Work one to one with students
  • Provide opportunities to attent after school clubs. Here we assist with homework and coursework.
  • Group work addressing issues such as self-esteem, positive behaviour and communication skills
  • Work closely with Maths, English and Science departments
  • Build links with feeder primary schools
  • Assist with students coming into year 7

Immanuel will identify pupils to be mentored for a range of reasons which include.

  • Having low self esteem
  • Being bullied (or being a bully)
  • Having poor peer relationships
  • Failing to make progress against set targets
  • Failure to realise potential within the Gifted and Tallented Cohort
  • Having poor study skills
  • Suffering bereavement
  • Requiring support for transition.

Learning Mentors assiste the College with visits and placements, work placements and trips. The trips that we organise are very popular and well attended. We run lunch clubs every day for students.

TRANSITION

The transition program involves training up several year 9 students to lead small group activities with year 6 students that are still at Primary school. We carry out a minimum of 20 visits with out year 7 students carrying out question ans answer sessions and ice-breaker games. Transition happens from February to the summer term.

Transition day at Blakehill

On Friday the 28th January we went to Blakehill Primary and spoke to year 6 pupils about moving up to secondary school. The year 6s and 7s were not only from Blakehill, but also from Hanson School, Cavendish Primary, Poplars Farm and Parkwood. Ten students and three mentors from Imanuel went along and we thought it was a great day. There were three different groups running activities throughout the day. We all thought the groups were brilliant.

We started with a circle time activity which involved working on our organisational skills. Other sessions involved a timeline and becoming familiar with a timetable.

We all made lots of new friends. I think that some people will come to Immanuel - some people from primary schools seemed to like the idea of after school clubs like our Drama club.

We also like the rugby section. This involved coaches from Braford Bulls spending some time training and coaching us. At the end of the day we agreed that the day had been a success and we now look forward to seeing the new students in September.
