We aim to develop studentsenthusiasm for learning about mathematics
We aim for all students to become numerate
-
Develop their mathematical knowledge
-
Develop their understanding of mathematical concepts and how they relate to the real world
-
Develop their oral, written, reading, ICT, thinking and practical skills in a broad spectrum of mathematical contexts
-
Appreciate how mathematics is relevant to their own lives and enable them to better understand and make more informed decisions about the world around them
-
Transfer their mathematical knowledge and skills to other subject areas
-
Become confident, competent and increasingly independent learners within a mathematical context
-
Develop their abilities to reason logically, to classify, to generalise and to prove as well as how to think imaginatively and creatively
-
Cover in full the programmes of study set out in the National Curriculum and in the case of AS/A level students, the appropriate syllabus content set out by the examination boards
-
Gain grades in external examinations commensurate with their abilities
-
Appreciate how mathematics relates to a Christian world view and ethos .

Literacy
Developing pupils’ literacy is clearly essential if they are to work towards becoming independent young adults able to integrate in to society effectively. To this end the maths department is committed to supporting the development of pupils’ literacy skills during mathematics lessons. Indeed, poor literacy is often a major barrier to pupils’ development in mathematics. Pupils will be encouraged and supported to read and interpret text effectively. They will be encouraged to discuss ideas and express their thinking clearly and confidently. Pupils will also be encouraged to produce intelligible written work, which is grammatically correct. |

Numeracy
The department is strongly committed to developing the level of numeracy of every pupil within the College. It is clear about the central importance a person’s numerical ability has in enabling them to conduct their affairs effectively in all walks of life. To that end, the department will actively promote the profile of numeracy both within mathematics lessons and across the school as a whole, including staff as well as pupils.
Numeracy is a proficiency that has developed mainly in mathematics but also in other subjects. It is more than an ability to do basic arithmetic. It involves developing confidence and competence with numbers and measures. It requires understanding of the number system, a repertoire of mathematical techniques, and an inclination and ability to solve quantitative or spatial problems in a range of contexts. Numeracy also demands understanding of the ways in which data are gathered by counting and measuring, and presented in graphs, diagrams, charts and tables.
Christianity and Mathematics
The mathematics department will endeavour to promote a Christian world view and ethos within its delivery of the subject. Opportunities for discussing Christian themes, values and principles will be identified and built in to the SOW. At department meetings staff will share ideas of how this can best be achieved.
