Art

The Key Stage 3 Art curriculum is modelled on the Areas of Study for GCSE Art. It is a spiral model which provides a progressive build up of skills throughout the key stage and equips students for study at both Key Stage 4 and 5. Pupils learn a range of skills, techniques and processes throughout each of the units which are taught in a practical way through whole class, small group and one to one tutorials.

Year 7

Unit 1- Colour Wheel

Looking at colour mixing and blending and how colours relate to one another

Unit 2- Textures

How to draw different textures and mark making using pencil, paint and pen

Unit 3- Fantasy Animal

Students will produce observation drawing both in pen and pencil. They will use texture and colour to create a fantasy animal of their choice, design based project. Colour and composition will be taught throughout

Unit 4- Modigliani Portrait

Students will be taught the proportions of the face and how to add tone to make a face look 3D. Students will use gridding to draw then experiment with paint and colour blending. Modiglian (artist) will be the main focus

Unit 5- Repeat Pattern

Students will use William Morris (artist) as a source of inspiration. Students will design and develop their own individual repeat patter. This will be printed- Mono printing. Students will explore a range of materials including paint and oil pastels.

Unit 6- Cubist Landscape

Looking at cubism students will design and develop their own fantasy landscape. Students are to review and refine shapes and add colour using paint and pencil.

Unit 7- Aboriginal Patterns

Students will look at Aboriginal art work- They will then look at mark making, pattern and colour to produce their own pattern based on a map. Stents will look at colour and shape

Year 8

Unit 1- Perspective

Students will produce a 2 point perspective fantasy architecture piece. Pupils will produce a technical drawing, cover colour blending and colour application

Unit 2- Robot Masks-3D

Students will produce Observation pen, pencil and paint studies of cogs and mechanics. Students will lead on to a design process to design an individual creative robot mask. Final outcome will be a 3D mixed media robot mask

Unit 3- Lettering

Looking at text, lettering and font design. Pupils will look at graffiti techniques and produce their own lettering. This will then lead onto card construction and a 3D letter. Students will cover building, painting and designing techniques

Unit 4- Clay Chocolate Bar

Students will be taught 3D clay skills. This will begin with observational drawing and a design process. Students will look at the qualities of clay and how it can be manipulated. Students will create and paint their own chocolate bar.

Year 9

Unit 1- 3D Mehdi Hand

Students will be inspired by a cultural reference. Students will design their own pattern, this will then lead on to a 3D hand cast from Modroc. This will be decorated with string to create a relief. Students will consider, colour blending, painting skills and 3D techniques

Unit 2- Identity

Mixed media. Students will have the opportunity to produce a layered self-portrait. This will cover proportion drawing and text. Students will explore layers and mixed media techniques

Unit 3- Lettering

Unit 4- Clay Chocolate Bar

Students will be taught 3D clay skills. This will begin with observational drawing and a design process. Students will look at the qualities of clay and how it can be manipulated. Students will create and paint their own chocolate bar.

Unit 5- Design and layout

Student will use a variety of media to create a skate board design. They will have the opportunity to run through a design and development process in preparation for GCSE courses. They will also look at modern art to link in with their work. Students will produce a piece of individual work based on their own interests.
